Painting Restoration of a 1929 home

"In October–November 2012, I hired John Otis and his sons, Jason and Derrick, to paint both the interior and the exterior of my recently purchased home. The interior was quite a challenge, as the house is a bit of an antique—namely, a Craftsman bungalow built in 1929. That style of house is characterized by wonderful architectural details, including numerous built-ins, extensive moldings, and other quirky, but difficult-to-paint elements. Adding to the challenge was the fact that, although the trim was all a creamy white, every room was painted a different color. John and company did a beautiful job patiently and expertly painting all of the many trim elements, including the intricately louvered shutters in the living room and the interiors of the closets. The result was exactly what I wanted: a fresh look that respected and enhanced the history of the house. John was also conscientious in pointing out where more coats of paint were needed instead of the usual number, when he noticed that the original paint was bleeding through my selected color.

On the house’s exterior, John, Jason, and Derrick also did expert work on the one-and-a-half story home. To do so, they had to climb ladders and navigate the roof to reach the dormer windows, along with dodging the thorns on my holly bushes, which they did without complaint. Again, when painting the porch floor, John’s experience was greatly appreciated; he recommended an extra coat based on the bleed-through potential given my choice of red for the floor, and the extra coat was well worth the added effort. I’ve already received many compliments from the neighbors!

The Otis crew completed the job very quickly, which I appreciated because of the tight deadline before the movers arrived with my furniture. Moreover, they cleaned up everything and restored storm/screened windows, window treatments, doorknobs, and other items to their original places once the work was complete. I was very satisfied with the entire job, and would definitely recommend John and sons to anyone."
